The short version

Splitsly stores the ledger you and your flatmates create, and the minimum needed to sign you in. It never touches your money, never reads your SMS, and never asks for your contacts.

What we store

  • Identity. A display name, and whichever of phone number, email address or Google account you signed in with. Phone numbers are stored alongside a hash used to match you to invitations.
  • The ledger. Groups, members, expenses, splits, settlements and comments. This is the product. It is shared with the other people in your groups, which is the point of a shared ledger.
  • Devices and sessions. So you can sign out of a phone you no longer have, and so we can send you a notification when someone adds an expense.
  • Receipts you upload. Stored in object storage, reachable only through short-lived signed links.

What we never store

  • Your money. There is no wallet, no escrow and no in-app balance. There never will be.
  • Your UPI PIN, card details or bank credentials. Payment happens inside your own UPI app, not here.
  • Your contact list. Splitsly doesn’t request the contacts permission at all.
  • Your SMS. Splitsly doesn’t request the SMS permission at all.

How settle-up works, and why it matters here

When you settle up, Splitsly builds a standard UPI payment link and hands it to your UPI app. You confirm the payment there. Splitsly isn’t in the path of the transaction, never receives the funds, and gets no confirmation back from any bank. The settlement recorded in your ledger is your own assertion that you paid, which is why the person you paid can confirm or dispute it.

Deletion

You can delete your account. Your profile, devices and sessions are deleted outright. The ledger rows that are entangled with other people, meaning expenses and settlements that changed somebody else’s balance, are pseudonymised rather than removed, because deleting them would silently change what your flatmates owe each other. Your name is replaced with a placeholder and the arithmetic stays correct.

Sharing

Splitsly doesn’t sell data and doesn’t run ads on any tier. Data is processed by the infrastructure providers needed to run the service: hosting, object storage, push notification delivery, SMS delivery for one-time codes, and error reporting. Nothing else.
